MDS in Orthodontics
The Master of Dental Surgery in Orthodontics (MDS) program focuses on all three important areas of postgraduate programs – subject competency, research orientation and teaching methodology. It includes all three domains of education – knowledge, skills and attitude required to pursue the professional career as a specialist in their respective field
Goal:
The goal of the MDS (Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics) program is to produce a well communicative, ethically strong, academically sound, clinically competent, and research oriented Orthodontist
Objectives:
The objective is divided into three basic components:
1. Service
2. Research
3. Education
Duration of the course:
The training period leading to MDS (Orthodontics and Dento-facial Orthopedics) shall be of 3 years. The department will provide all the opportunities and guidance to the residents throughout the course so that he/she will be capable of practicing independently.
Time Allocation:
Percentage of the students’ total program time devoted to each segment of the program:
1. Applied basic and clinical sciences 80 %
2. Research 17 %
3. Teaching 3 %

Teacing-learning media:
learning activities are overhead projector, LCD projector, models, simulated patients, real patients, video clips, typhodont exercises, posters, photographs, books, and journals.
Research Dissertation:
Seventeen percentage of total time is allocated to research activities. This includes Research dissertation as well as reviews of past research works.
A thesis submission and successful defense is a partial requirement of the course. research thesis must be submitted at least six months prior to the final examination, failing to which the candidate will not be allowed to appear in the final examination.
Evaluation:
This will consist of two components:
1. Formative Evaluation: Periodic formative evaluation will be done with the help of following tools:
 The maintenance of logbook to register the day-to-day activities, participation and performance in academics. The logbook will be regularly monitored.
 Periodic internal assessment in theory, practical and dissertation works.
2. Summative Evaluation: This will be conducted by the University.
Eligibility: The eligibility to appear in the university examination includes-
 Attendance 80%
 Completion of Preclinical works.
 Maintenance of log books duly signed by preceptor.
 Completion of clinical cases to be presented in the examination.
 Completion of Research dissertation.
The University examination will comprise:
A. Theory Examination: consists of four papers :
1. Paper I – Applied basic science
2. Paper II – Diagnostic procedures and treatment planning
3. Paper III – Clinical orthodontics
4. Paper IV- Recent advancement in Orthodontic
Evaluation tools: Structured essay questions, Short answer questions and multiple choice questions (MCQs)
B. Practical Examination: The practical and viva examination includes-
1. Presentation of Preclinical exercises.
2. One new case for diagnosis and treatment planning and fabrication of prescribed appliance.
3. Presentation of 5 finished cases.
4. Presentation of 5 cases being treated to show the resident’s exposure in diversified areas of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
5. Grand viva
C. Defense of thesis and demonstration of teaching methodology (100 marks).
