Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) is a specialized field of dentistry and surgery that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the face, mouth, jaws, teeth, and neck. It combines elements of dentistry and medicine to address both functional and aesthetic concerns. It encompasses a wide range of procedures, including
– reconstructive surgery,
-facial trauma management,
-cleft lip and palate correction,
-Cosmetic facial surgery.
OMFS requires extensive training, often involving degrees in both medicine and dentistry, depending on the country. In Nepal, oral and maxillofacial surgeons may pursue additional sub-specialty training in areas such as craniofacial surgery, head and neck cancer treatment, and facial cosmetic procedures.
