Academic & Basic Science

BDS Programme

Peoples Dental College and Hospital (PDCH) offers a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program affiliated to Tribhuvan University (TU). The BDS program at PDCH lasts for five and half years. TU syllabus integrates basic medical science, clinical medical science and clinical dental science and a one-year compulsory rotating internship. The BDS program aims to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge to treat and prevent dental health problems, emphasizing both clinical and preventive aspects of dentistry.

Integrated Basic Medical Science (IBMS)

The initial two years of BDS program is focused on basic science subjects collectively known as Integrated Basic Medical Science (IBMS). Integrated Basic Medical Science (IBMS) refers to a curriculum approach that combines the traditional, often separate, subjects of basic medical sciences with clinical content. This approach aims to create a more comprehensive understanding of the human body and how it functions, both in health and disease, for medical students. It is also known as the integrated organ system based approach.

IBMS integrates disciplines like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology and pharmacology often within an organ system-based framework

The goal is to make the basic science content more directly relevant to clinical practice and to help students understand how basic science principles apply to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. IBMS can improve student comprehension and retention of both basic science and clinical content. More over the learning process is enhanced by organization of various creative activities like group discussion, poster presentation, co-relation seminars etc. The various department under IBMS are:

  1. Department of Anatomy

The Department of Anatomy at People’s Dental College and Hospital (PDCH), Kathmandu, Nepal, plays a foundational role in medical and dental education. It focuses on the study of the structure of the human body through dissection, histology, and embryology. The department is equipped with a dissection hall, histology lab, and museum, providing hands-on learning experiences for students. Faculty members are committed to both teaching and guiding research activities, helping students build a strong base in human anatomy essential for clinical practice.

  1. Department of Biochemistry

The Department of Biochemistry provides essential academic support for students enrolled in Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). Our courses help students understand how the human body functions at the molecular level—knowledge that is key to diagnosing diseases, developing treatments, and promoting public health. Classes are conducted using clear, structured teaching methods, with a strong focus on real-life medical and clinical relevance, ensuring students grasp the subject in a meaningful and engaging way.

Practical training is a central part of our approach. Students regularly work in our well-equipped biochemistry labs to gain hands-on experience in techniques such as blood and urine analysis, enzyme activity, and metabolic studies. We organize guided visits to molecular diagnostic laboratories, where they observe modern testing methods like PCR and gene-based diagnostics in action. This exposure helps them connect classroom learning with current technologies used in clinical settings, preparing them for both higher studies and careers in healthcare and laboratory science.

  1. Department of Microbiology

The department of microbiology at PDCH provides comprehensive academic support to students in the field of microbiology. It provides a complete learning environment including both theoretical and practical knowledge in various subspecialties like Systemic and Diagnostic Bacteriology, Parasitology, Virology, Mycology, and Immunology.

The department provides in-depth information and hands-on training regarding the transmission of microorganisms, disease etiology, laboratory diagnosis and treatment of pathogens that are important to public health. Our well-equipped laboratories along with the highly experienced, qualified and dedicated faculty members focus on developing competency in students for higher studies and understanding the clinical practice.

  1. Department of Physiology

The Department of Physiology at Peoples Dental College is a fundamental academic and research unit. The Department provides foundational teaching in human Physiology to Bachelor of Dental surgery (BDS). Physiology as a discipline, explores the functions and mechanisms of the human body, from cellular and molecular level to the integrated functions of organ systems.

Teaching methodologies involve lectures, small group discussions, practical demonstrations and laboratory experiments.

The Department typically houses well equipped laboratory for practical. Students enrolled in various program will have access to laboratory. The practical performed in laboratory will be helpful for them to connect with the classroom lectures and in their careers.

  1. Department of Pharmacology

The Department of pharmacology provides essential academic support for students enrolled in Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). Our courses help students to understand theoretical knowledge of drugs, prescribing drug rationally and safely. The practical performed in laboratory will be helpful for calculation of different doses, understanding different dosage form and their application.

  1. Department of Pathology

The Department of Pathology at People’s Dental College and Hospital (PDCH), plays a foundational role in dental education. It focuses on the study of pathogenesis of disease and its laboratory diagnosis. The department provides academic support regarding histopathology, cytopathology, hematology and clinical pathology both theoretically and practically. Faculty members are committed to both teaching and guiding research activities, helping students build a strong base in pathology essential for clinical practice.
